KEARNEY — A semi-trailer caught fire on Interstate 80 and brought eastbound traffic to a halt between Kearney and Odessa during the afternoon hours of Saturday, May 3.

Around 2:45 p.m., the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to mile marker 267 on I-80 for the report of a semi-trailer fire and grass fire.

The semi and trailer would become fully engulfed and mutual aid would be requested from the Elm Creek fire department, which responded with a grass rig and several other vehicles.

As a result, eastbound traffic came to a standstill, nearly reaching back to Odessa. One north lane was kept open to allow traffic to pass by the scene.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control near the scene. CHI Health Good Samaritan EMS was also present at the scene.

More details will be shared when they become available.
