HUSKER VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES TOTAL SWEEP OF AMERITAS PLAYERS CHALLENGE:

It was a perfect opening weekend for Nebraska volleyball.

The Huskers (3-0) finished off the Ameritas Players Challenge with a sweep of SMU (1-2): 25-16, 23, 16. The victory saw NU use its third starting lineup in three matches.

Harper Murray was named Most Valuable Player of the event. The rest of the All-Tournament team included two other Huskers: Lexi Rodriguez and Laney Choboy.

Nebraska is next in action taking on Omaha Wednesday. The two teams will meet after UNK and Wayne State face off at Volleyball Day in Nebraska at Memorial Stadium.

HASTINGS COLLEGE ERASES DEFICIT, OVERCOMES PERU STATE:

It was a night to remember for Hastings College football erasing a 17-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Peru St. 37-31 in overtime on Saturday night at the Oak Bowl.

Peru State was in control of this game leading 31-14 in the fourth quarter. After cutting the lead to 10, the Broncos earned an onside kick recovery followed by a touchdown strike by Eli Nappe to Ethan Wilborn.

Another onside recovery later, and Hastings College nailed a field goal to tie the game in regulation.

The Broncos would win the game in overtime on a Brett Simonsen touchdown run, 37-31.

Hastings improves to 1-0 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 9 hitting the road to take on Dakota Wesleyan.

HUSKER FOOTBALL, BASEBALL RECEIVE IN-STATE COMMIT:

Conor Booth of (Wahoo) Bishop Neumann announced on Sunday morning his commitment to Husker to further his career in both football and baseball.

The 2025 prospect received an offer from the Huskers back on June 13 after camping in Lincoln.

Listed at 6-1, 210 pounds, he had 964 yards on 72 carries as fullback last season, averaging 13.4 yards per touch. He also had four catches for 100 yards, having a hand in 20 touchdowns when you count a kick return he also brought back to the house. He also averaged 40 yards per punt.

On the diamond Booth has played outfield and done some catching.

HUSKER MBB TOMINAGA AIDS JAPAN IN FIBA COMEBACK:

Nebraska guard Keisei Tominaga had 17 points off the bench, as Japan rallied from an 18-point third-quarter deficit in a 98-88 victory over Finland Sunday morning in the FIBA World Cup.

Tominaga hit 6-of-9 shots, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, while adding three steals and two assists in 18:35 of playing time, posting a +17 in the minutes he played. Tominaga had 11 of his 17 points in the second half.

Tominaga is the fourth Husker to participate in the FIBA World Cup, joining Tai Webster (2014 and 2019), Jorge Brian Diaz (2014 and 2019) and Bill Johnson, who won a gold medal with the United States in 1954.

HUSKER FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – DEFENSIVE PLAYERS:

GIFFORD – MINNESOTA SCHEME IS FAMILIAR:

Isaac Gifford, Nebraska defender, was adamant after Friday’s practice that this Minnesota team and scheme are all too familiar…

Nebraska has not taken down Minnesota since 2018, when the Big Red earned Scott Frost’s first victory as Husker Football head coach.

GIFFORD – MORE TRUST SINCE THE BEGINNING OF SPRING:

Nebraska Football is only a few days away from officially starting the Matt Rhule era in Lincoln, as Huskers defensive back Isaac Gifford said the level of trust throughout the team has grown…

Nebraska’s hoping that trust leads to more wins, as the Big Red have not sniffed the postseason since 2016.

REIMER – MINNESOTA IS JUST ANOTHER OPPONENT:

Linebacker for Nebraska Football Luke Reimer spoke about their season opening opponent after Friday’s practice, and added that the Golden Gophers are just like any other foe…

Nebraska has not downed PJ Fleck’s team since the first year of Scott Frost’s tenure in Lincoln back in 2018.

REIMER – SEASON OPENER IS BIGGER WITH CONFERENCE FOE:

Luke Reimer, Nebraska linebacker, added after Friday’s media session that opening the season with a Big Ten conference opponent makes Week One even more important…

The Huskers have opened the season with a conference foe each year since the COVID 2020 season – and have not won a season opener since beating South Alabama in 2019.

ROBINSON – FORGET THAT LENHARDT IS A FRESHMAN:

Senior defensive lineman Ty Robinson spoke after Friday’s media session about how impactful incoming freshman end Cameron Lenhardt has been throughout preseason camp…

Lenhardt was named a preseason freshman All-American during fall camp.

ROBINSON – DEFENSIVE LINE IS A TIGHT UNIT:

Defensive lineman Ty Robinson spoke to the media after Friday’s practice and was asked about the camaraderie amongst the defensive linemen…

Nebraska’s defensive line returns with limited experience aside from Robinson, as several transfers and freshman are expected to contribute for the Big Red.
