RHULE TENURE STARTS IN MINNESOTA:
The Matt Rhule era begins in Minnesota kicking off conference play, the Nebraska Football season, and a new tenure of hope for Big Red fans tonight.
The game will be our first glimpse at what Matt Rhule has been up to rebuilding the Cornhuskers program. It is also a chance for Nebraska to breakthrough their season opening curses, as the Huskers haven’t won the first game of their season since 2019
The contest kicks off at 7 PM tonight on FOX and can also be heard on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com with pregame starting at 3 PM. HITS 106 KQKY will also have the contest across the Tri-Cities, beginning pregame at 6:15 PM.
UNK FOOTBALL BEGINS NEW ERA IN EDMOND:
The 117th season in Nebraska Kearney football history kicks off tonight in Edmond as the Lopers take on the Central Oklahoma Bronchos.
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. from Chad Richison Stadium and can be viewed on The MIAA Network.
UCO leads the all-time series, 6-5, but UNK has taken the last two meetings. The Lopers are also 3-2 all-time in Edmond, winning in 2021, 2018 and 1994.
Last year at Cope Stadium, super senior Junior Gonzales hit a walk-off field goal to lift the Blue & Gold to a 20-18 victory on “Senior Day.” The game featured six made field goals and 204 combined rushing yards between quarterbacks TJ Davis (Colorado Springs) and Stephon Brown.
Both of those QB’s return for their teams who were tied for fifth in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll.
VOLLEYBALL DAY SMASHES WORLD RECORD FOR ATTENDANCE:
It was a record-breaking night at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday when Nebraska hosted Omaha in an outdoor volleyball match. The attendance of 92,003 set a record for the largest crowd to watch a women’s sporting event in the United States. The crowd of more than 92,000 also surpassed what is widely regarded as the world-record attendance for any women’s sporting event.
The previously recognized world record was 91,648 fans in an UEFA Champions League match between Barcelona and Wolfsburg on April 22, 2022, at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain. The previous record for an American women’s sporting event was 90,185 in USA’s FIFA World Cup Final against China on July 10, 1999, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Along with the two records mentioned above, the Huskers shattered a pair of NCAA records on Wednesday night, exceeding the previous records for any NCAA volleyball match and an NCAA volleyball regular-season match.
The Husker volleyball program has sold out 306 consecutive regular-season matches, though tonight’s match does not count toward the streak as it is being played outside the Huskers’ main home facility, the Devaney Center. Nebraska’s sellout streak is an NCAA women’s record.
HUSKERS SWEEP MAVERICKS ON HISTORIC NIGHT AT MEMORIAL:
The Nebraska volleyball team delighted a crowd of more than 92,000 by never trailing during a 3-0 sweep of Omaha on Wednesday night in an outdoor match at Memorial Stadium.
While Nebraska (4-0) was dominant in its fourth straight sweep to start the season, it was Husker Nation who stole the show on Volleyball Day in Nebraska.
Nebraska won all three sets by double digits in its 25-14, 25-14, 25-13 sweep. The Huskers hit .263 for the match while holding Omaha (0-3) to a -.080 attack percentage.
Seven Huskers had multiple kills on the historic night.
Nebraska plays its first road match of the season on Sunday, when the Huskers travel to Manhattan, Kansas, to take on the Kansas State Wildcats. First serve is set for 4 p.m.

LOPER WBB SETS NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:
The 2023 non-conference opponents for UNK Women’s Basketball were officially listed Thursday morning.
UNK will start their year on Nov. 10 facing the University of Minnesota-Crookston, followed by a Saturday matchup at Southwest Minnesota State as part of the NSIC/MIAA Challenge in Marshall, Minn.
The Lopers will also take on the College of St. Mary, Nebraska Wesleyan, and Chadron State prior to beginning their conference schedule.

HUSKERS’ TOMINAGA AIDS JAPAN IN FIBA WIN:
Keisei Tominaga and Japan moved one win away from qualifying for the 2024 Olympics with an 86-77 win over Venezuela Thursday morning at the FIBA World Cup.
Tominaga had five points, one rebound and an assist in 14 minutes for Japan, which won its second game in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Japan can clinch a berth in the Paris Olympics on Saturday when it takes on Cape Verde.
STORM ANNOUNCE PRESEASON SCHEDULE:
The Tri-City Storm has announced the organization’s exhibition schedule ahead of the 2023-2024 USHL Regular Season.
The Storm will play five preseason contests prior to opening the sixty-two-game regular season campaign at the USHL Fall Classic in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, September 20th in a showdown against the reigning Clark Cup Champion Youngstown Phantoms.
The Storm will compete in three preseason games at Liberty First Credit Union Arena in an exhibition showcase hosted by the Omaha Lancers on Friday, September 8th, Saturday, September 9th, and Sunday, September 10th. Tri-City will battle the Sioux Falls Stampede at 1:30pm CT in the team’s opening game of the event on Friday, September 8th. The Storm will play the Waterloo Black Hawks at 4:00pm CT on Saturday, September 9th, before closing out the Lancers Bowl preseason event at 12:00pm CT on Sunday, September 10th in a game against the defending Anderson Cup Champion Fargo Force.
Tri-City will conclude exhibition play with a pair of games against the Omaha Lancers on Wednesday, September 13th, and Saturday, September 16th.
