ALMA — Anyone enjoying the Labor Day weekend in Harlan County will need to be mindful of fire-starting activities. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Saturday.

The National Weather Service – Hastings has issued the watch due to south winds at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph and relative humidity amounts as low as 16 percent.

The watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through the evening hours, it also extends into Furnas County in Nebraska and Phillips, Smith and Rooks counties in northern Kansas.

Any fires that ignite have the potential to spread rapidly. NWS Hastings advises residents to use caution when engaging in any activity that could result in a fire starting.

Per the latest drought monitor update, a circle of abnormally dry, D0, conditions is surrounded by moderate drought, D1, conditions in Harlan County, while most of Furnas County is under D0 conditions.
