UNK Soccer Falls to Late Penalty Kick

ALVA, OKLA. – Super senior Cammie Davis converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute but it wasn’t enough as Northwestern Oklahoma State downed Nebraska Kearney, 2-1, Monday afternoon Alva.

The Rangers, from the Great American Conference, improved 1-2-0 as they previously faced MIAA members Fort Hays State and Newman. The Lopers (0-2-0) host Drury (Mo.) and Quincy (Ill.) next weekend at Cope stadium.

UNK out shot NWOSU, 6-4, over the first 45 minutes but couldn’t get a ball past junior keeper Rachel Brown. Two scoring efforts from Colorado freshman Sarah Levy were blocked by the defense with Brown stopping another Levy shot as well as one taken by Kearney sophomore Gracie Perez. Finally, efforts from Kansas sophomore Reagan Downes and Colorado junior Katie Pagel sailed high.

NOWSU was offsides six times in the first half while UNK had three of the game’s first four corners.

About 15 minutes after the break, junior forward Isabella McMillian broke the tie with her seventh goal. She went low and into the middle of the net. Seventeen minutes later, NWOSU added some insurance when grad student Carlie Massingale scored via a pass from freshman defender Ellie Dang.

Davis (Wichita) got the Lopers board after the Rangers were dinged for a foul. They had eight in the contest compared to just one for UNK. Her third career goal just seconds after NW Okie had increased its lead. Down the stretch, Davis had a shot go high in the 87th minute with Lincoln junior keeper Mackenzie Smith recording five saves in goal.

Drury and Eastern New Mexico play an 11 a.m. game at Forster Field before the Lopers and Hawks square off at 2 p.m.
