GISH SURVIVES STORM, NORFOLK FOR TOMLIN’S 200th WIN:
Getting a 200th career coaching victory for Grand Island Senior High’s Jeff Tomlin didn’t come easily for the Islanders.
Possessing a 21-6 lead after three quarters, Grand Island lost two fourth-quarter fumbles and Norfolk scored 13 points in the game’s final 6:42 and had a chance to tie the score with 17 seconds left.
However, Islanders’ senior safety Hunter Hanquist broke up a pass on a two-point conversion attempt and GISH made one final defensive stand after the Panthers recovered an onside kick to hold on for a 21-19 road victory Thursday night.
Tomlin is 200-108 overall as a head coach with a 144-70 mark in 21 seasons at Grand Island.
BEARCAT TENNIS SENIOR ASHER SAULSBURY BREAKS CAREER WINS MARK:
A historic day wrapped up in Lexington for Asher Saulsbury, as the Bearcat senior earned the all-time career mark for singles victories.
Saulsbury – a member of last year’s state runner-up team as the state runner-up in the No. 1 singles – passed the career mark with a 8-0 victory over Noah Scheer on Thursday.
Saulsbury now has 106 career singles victories.
KHS CELEBRATES HALL OF FAME WITH NEW INDUCTEES TONIGHT:
A longer halftime at the Kearney Bearcat football contest tonight will celebrate the achievements of a significant Kearney family and a former Bearcat standout.
Chase Biedeck will be recognized as a new inductee. He graduated from Kearney in 2003 and competed in varsity football and track and field his junior and senior years. He helped anchor the best defense in Class A football his senior year. He helped his team on both the offensive and defensive lines to a 10-2 record and lost to the eventual state champions in the semi final round of the 2002 state football championships.
He is the current strength and conditioning coach for the University of Nebraska’s Track and Field program, his Alma Mater, and resides in Lincoln with his wife Jenna and their three sons Cash, Colt and Crew.
Three generations of the David and Ann Bauer family have been involved in athletics at Kearney High School from 1984 to present.
Ann was the Director of the Choirs, while David officiated many area wrestling tournaments and duals for over twenty years.
Paul and Marc Bauer wrestled for KHS in 1984 and 1985, as Marc – the current UNK Athletic Director – is No. 1 all-time in wins at Kearney High.
Andrew Bauer is No. 2 on that all-time list. Joshua Bauer was a three-time state qualifier in cross country.
Ryan Bauer – current KHS wrestling coach – was a state qualifier in 2011. Scott Bauer was Academic All-State and wrestled from 2009-2013.
Allison Bauer was a two-time All-American with the Dance Catz and is a current cheerleader for the Denver Broncos. Julia Bauer played tennis for KHS, and was a two-time #1 Doubles State qualifier.
All inductees will be honored at halftime of the KHS/LNS football contest tonight.
HUSKER FOOTBALL THURSDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS – MATT RHULE:
RHULE – PROCHAZKA GETTING READY TO GET BACK:
Nebraska Football Head Coach Matt Rhule began his Thursday press conference by talking about injured offensive tackle Teddy Prochazka and his availability for the weekend…
Prochazka missed most of fall camp and the season opener at Minnesota due to a sustained injury. He has also missed significant time the past two seasons with knee injuries.
RHULE – FRESHMEN CONTINUING TO GET READY TO PLAY:
Nebraska Football may need to rely on younger talent due to injuries early in the season, as head coach Matt Rhule added at Thursday’s media session the freshmen are getting prepared…
The receiving corp saw Malachi Coleman and Jaylen Lloyd – both true freshmen – receive playing time at Minnesota in Week One.
RHULE – LESS TURNOVERS MEAN LESS PLAYS:
Head Coach for Nebraska Football Matt Rhule spoke at his Thursday press conference about the importance of turnovers – for and against the Huskers as they prefer for Colorado…
Colorado had one fumble in their upset win over TCU while the Horned Frogs threw three interceptions. Nebraska gave up four turnovers against Minnesota in Week One.
RHULE – NEED MORE OFFENSIVE PLAYS:
Nebraska Football’s offense aims to have more offensive plays and rhythm this week against Colorado, as Head Coach Matt Rhule reiterated during his Thursday press conference…
Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield added Wednesday that the team needs to establish a physical running game to get back to their pace.
RHULE – NO CONCERNS ABOUT REBOUNDING FROM LOSS:
Nebraska Football has had more one score losses in the past five seasons than any other team in the country. First year Big Red head coach Matt Rhule was asked if there was any concern that his team may not be able to rebound heading to Colorado…
The Huskers look to avenge their Week One loss over now rated No. 22 Colorado.
RHULE – NOT WORRIED ABOUT ANYTHING EXCEPT FOOTBALL:
Husker Football is under a microscope this week with the added pressure of facing Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes. Head Coach Matt Rhule was asked if his team has been distracted with the added attention from social media…
Rhule added that his team’s focus must stay away from the outside pressures and noise – including the added media attention from being the premiere game of Week Two.
LIONS SPOIL CHIEFS SUPER BOWL CELEBRATION IN NFL OPENER:
The Lions walked into roaring Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night, sprinting out with a 21-20 upset over the defending Super Bowl Champions.
Kansas City was limited as All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce was held out due to a knee injury, while All-Pro defensive end Chris Jones watched the game from a suite as he remains in a contract dispute.
Jared Goff threw for 253 yards and a touchdown, new Lions running back David Montgomery ran for the go-ahead score late in the game and Lions rookie Brian Branch returned Patrick Mahomes’ first pick in an opener 50 yards for another touchdown.
Kansas City had won eight consecutive Week One contests.
BURROW BECOMES HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN NFL:
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow became the highest-paid player in the NFL on Thursday, agreeing to a five-year, $275 million contract extension
The contract includes more than $219 million guaranteed.
The deal, which will pay Burrow an average of $55 million a year, puts him ahead of other top quarterbacks in the league who signed new contracts in the offseason.
Burrow has led the Bengals to two straight AFC North titles and a Super Bowl after the 2021 season, a 23-20 loss to the Rams. Cincinnati finished 12-4 last year, with Burrow setting franchise single-season records for completions, pass attempts and passing touchdowns.
