NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL TOPPLES TOP 25 KENTUCKY AT HOME:

The No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team defeated No. 21 Kentucky, 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21) on Sunday night in front of 8,531 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. 

Nebraska (9-0) finished non-conference play without a loss for the first time since 2016 and only the second time since 2008. 

Merritt Beason and Harper Murray each finished with 17 kills and 10 digs. Beason hit .438, and Murray hit .308. Ally Batenhorst totaled 12 kills, and Andi Jackson had 10 kills and three blocks with a .500 hitting percentage. Bekka Allick added four kills and a match-high six blocks. 

The Huskers begin Big Ten play on Friday at 8 p.m. against No. 19 Ohio State at the Devaney Center. NU will also host No. 9 Minnesota next Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

HAARBERG – FIRST DRIVE NEARLY FLAWLESS:

Kearney Catholic alum and Nebraska native Heinrich Haarberg earned his first start for the Huskers on Saturday, giving the Huskers the win 35-11. Haarberg’s first drive was nearly flawless, and the signal caller stated in his postgame it was a culmination of his career to this point…

Haarberg ended his day with nearly 100 rushing yards and 158 passing yards with three total touchdowns. 

 

HAARBERG – NOT THE PROTOTYPICAL QUARTERBACK:

Huskers quarterback Heinrich Haarberg earned the first win of 2023 after his first career start last Saturday, winning 35-11 over Northern Illinois. The Nebraska native said in his postgame his physical running ability can lift the team’s spirits through his non-traditional play…

Haarberg totaled nearly 100 yards rushing against the Huskies on Saturday night.

 

HAARBERG – NO TURNOVERS; CONFIDENCE IN DEFENSE:

The Blackshirts did give up a late touchdown but held the Huskies at bay while the offense rushed for nearly 100 fourth quarter yards to seal the contest late. 

 

LIONS ROAR, LOPER FOOTBALL FALLS AT HOME:

The Missouri Southern State Lions used a ball control offense to edge Nebraska Kearney, 18-13, Saturday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

The Lions (2-1) snap a five-game losing streak to the Lopers (1-2) and improve to 6-5 all-time in Kearney. 

MSSU had second half drives of 13, 13, nine and seven plays. Trailing 9-7 at the break, UNK totaled 11 second half plays; two three-and-outs, a first-down lost fumble and a four-play scoring drive.

UNK heads to nationally-ranked Pittsburg State next Saturday. The Gorillas (3-0) stopped a two-point conversion with 25 seconds left to win at Central Missouri today, 38-37.

 

HASTINGS COLLEGE DEFENSE SHINES IN WIN OVER JAMESTOWN:

The Hastings College football team was put to the test once again but came out on top 17-10 over the Jamestown Jimmies on Saturday afternoon on Lloyd Wilson Field.

Hastings took the lead after taking over late in the third quarter following a short punt. The Broncos marched down to the 16 when Eli Nappe connected with Will Austin for the touchdown and the Broncos led 17-10 with 14:14 to go in the fourth.

Hastings is now 3-1 (2-1) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 23 hitting the road to take on Briar Cliff with kickoff set for 6:00 pm out in Sioux City, IA.

 

UNK VOLLEYBALL BACK ON TRACK WITH WIN AT EMPORIA:

The seventh-ranked Nebraska Kearney volleyball team hit .413 to sweep Emporia State Saturday afternoon in Kansas.

The win comes after the No. 7 Lopers were swept by No. 15 rated Washburn on Friday night in Topeka.

The Lopers (10-1, 1-1) beat the improving Hornets (7-3, 1-1) for a 24th straight time in MIAA action.

UNK begins a four-match homestand tonight against Doane University.

 

LOPER XC CONTINUES STRONG START TO SEASON:

The nationally-ranked Nebraska Kearney cross country teams placed third (men) and seventh (women) at the annual Greeno/Dirksen Invitational Saturday morning in Lincoln.

The 23rd-ranked men tallied had all five of its scorers crack the top 15 to help the team score 51 points.

On the women’s side, the 27th-ranked Lopers had its scorers all in the top 32 to finish seventh in a field of 27 (109 points).

The Lopers head to another large meet, the annual Chile Pepper Festival at Arkansas, on Sept. 29.

 

STORM END PRESEASON WITH LOSS TO LANCERS:

The Tri-City Storm dropped a 2-1 decision to the Omaha Lancers Saturday night at the Viaero Center in the organization’s final game of the 2023-2024 preseason. 

The Storm now looks ahead to the opening game of the 2023-2024 regular season against the Youngstown Phantoms on Wednesday, September 20th at the 2023 DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic. T

Tri-City will play games against the Phantoms and the Sioux Falls Stampede to begin the sixty-two-game regular season before returning home to the Viaero Center for the Home Opener against the Sioux City Musketeers on Friday, September 29th

 

TRI-CITY ACQUIRED BADE IN TRADE WITH BLACK HAWKS:

The Tri-City Storm has acquired forward Zach Bade, a 7th round pick in the 2024 USHL Phase II Draft, and a 12th round pick in the 2024 USHL Phase II Draft from the Waterloo Black Hawks in exchange for defenseman Jake Delaney, and a 4th round pick in the 2024 USHL Phase II Draft. 

This transaction was announced following the conclusion of the Storm’s five-game exhibition schedule, and Bade is set to join the team for this week’s 2023 DICK’s Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic.

 

BRONCOS SOCCER REMAINS UNBLEMISHED:

The Hastings College women’s soccer team remained undefeated with its dominating win over Dakota Wesleyan by defeating the Tigers 5-0 on Saturday night on Lloyd Wilson Field.

Hastings improves to 6-0 (1-0) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Sept. 20 hitting the road to take on Jamestown with kickoff set for 8:00 pm.
