The Huskers host Louisiana Tech on Saturday from Memorial Stadium.

 

RHULE – EMMETT JOHNSON NEXT UP TO CONTRIBUTE:

With the injuries to Nebraska’s backfield, head coach Matt Rhule was asked if the next young back – Emmett Johnson – was ready to handle the increase in production for the Big Red…

Johnson has some experience from special teams action in his freshman season last year, but has not yet recorded a carry this year.

The Huskers’ Heinrich Haarberg led the way on Saturday against NIU, bringing Nebraska their first win of 2023 and for the Kearney Catholic alum.

 

RHULE – SPECIAL TEAMS SOME GOOD, SOME BAD:

Nebraska Football’s head coach Matt Rhule gave his opinion on the first stretch for his special teams through three games…

Rhule added that his team is close to making a big return, block, or other impact play but needs to close the gap to make a difference on the third phase of the game.

 

RHULE – TEAM KEPT BELIEF IN PROCESS:

Nebraska Football suffered two losses on the road to start their season before earning the first win for Matt Rhule at Nebraska on Saturday over NIU. Rhule added in his Monday press conference that he was happy to see the team keep its belief…

Rhule also added there was more energy and positivity in the building coming off the win as Nebraska prepares to host Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

 

HUSKER FOOTBALL BIT BY INJURY BUG:

Nebraska Football could not stay away from the injury bug after their first win in 2023, losing three major contributors during Saturday’s contest against Northern Illinois.

Running backs Rahmir Johnson and Gabe Ervin are now out for the year as Johnson separated his shoulder, requiring surgery. The injury ultimately ends Johnson’s career as a Husker with the 2023-24 season being his senior year.

The starting back for each contest this season, Gabe Ervin has a dislocated hip and will also be out for the remainder of the season. Both backs had major contributions including Ervin who was the leading rusher on the team.

 

NEBRASKA/MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SET FOR 2:30 KICKOFF:

Nebraska’s Sept. 30 home game against No. 2 Michigan will be televised by FOX Sports, as the Big Ten Conference announced its television schedule for that day Monday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central time. It will be the third game on FOX this season.

Nebraska Football can also be heard on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com. The Huskers are also on the Tri-Cities #1 Hit Music Station – HITS 106-KQKY at 105.9 FM.

The Huskers will have consecutive 2:30 p.m. kickoffs as this Saturday’s game against Louisiana Tech is also set for 2:30 p.m

 

NEBRASKA’S BEASON, MURRAY NAMED BIG TEN POTW:

Merritt Beason was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Harper Murray was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced. 

Beason led the Huskers to a 3-1 road win at No. 5 Stanford and a 3-1 home win against No. 21 Kentucky with 4.00 kills per set on a .354 hitting percentage to go with 1.88 digs per set. Beason had a season-high 17 kills and 10 digs and hit .438 in the win over Kentucky.

Murray earned her second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 3.63 kills per set with a .349 hitting percentage and 2.00 digs per set in Nebraska’s two victories.

 

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL’S KRAUSE STATUS “DAY-TO-DAY”:

Nebraska Volleyball Coach John Cook said Lindsay Krause did not play against #21 Kentucky on Sunday after being involved in a car accident last week.

The crash happened Wednesday at 2 p.m. on an off-day for the team. According to Lincoln Police, Krause was rear-ended while she was stopped in traffic near 46th and O Streets near Chick-fil-A. Police stated the other driver left the scene.

The accident report lists Krause with minor injuries.

Coach Cook said Krause’s status is “day-to-day” following the crash and she only practiced for 10 minutes on Sunday.

 

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL TOPPLES TOP 25 KENTUCKY AT HOME:

The No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team defeated No. 21 Kentucky, 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21) on Sunday night in front of 8,531 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. 

Nebraska (9-0) finished non-conference play without a loss for the first time since 2016 and only the second time since 2008. 

Merritt Beason and Harper Murray each finished with 17 kills and 10 digs. Beason hit .438, and Murray hit .308. Ally Batenhorst totaled 12 kills, and Andi Jackson had 10 kills and three blocks with a .500 hitting percentage. Bekka Allick added four kills and a match-high six blocks. 

The Huskers begin Big Ten play on Friday at 8 p.m. against No. 19 Ohio State at the Devaney Center. NU will also host No. 9 Minnesota next Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

Nebraska accomplished many of its preseason goals – including winning the turnover battle, rushing for over 75 yards in the fourth quarter, and winning the time of possession.

HAARBERG – FIRST DRIVE NEARLY FLAWLESS:

Kearney Catholic alum and Nebraska native Heinrich Haarberg earned his first start for the Huskers on Saturday, giving the Huskers the win 35-11. Haarberg’s first drive was nearly flawless, and the signal caller stated in his postgame it was a culmination of his career to this point…

Haarberg ended his day with nearly 100 rushing yards and 158 passing yards with three total touchdowns. 

 

HAARBERG – NOT THE PROTOTYPICAL QUARTERBACK:

Huskers quarterback Heinrich Haarberg earned the first win of 2023 after his first career start last Saturday, winning 35-11 over Northern Illinois. The Nebraska native said in his postgame his physical running ability can lift the team’s spirits through his non-traditional play…

Haarberg totaled nearly 100 yards rushing against the Huskies on Saturday night.

 

HAARBERG – NO TURNOVERS; CONFIDENCE IN DEFENSE:

Heinrich Haarberg, Nebraska quarterback, spoke in his postgame comments after the Northern Illinois win about what his goals for the week were and how the Huskers were so successful throughout the contest…

The Blackshirts did give up a late touchdown but held the Huskies at bay while the offense rushed for nearly 100 fourth quarter yards to seal the contest late. 

 

LIONS ROAR, LOPER FOOTBALL FALLS AT HOME:

The Missouri Southern State Lions used a ball control offense to edge Nebraska Kearney, 18-13, Saturday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

The Lions (2-1) snap a five-game losing streak to the Lopers (1-2) and improve to 6-5 all-time in Kearney. 

MSSU had second half drives of 13, 13, nine and seven plays. Trailing 9-7 at the break, UNK totaled 11 second half plays; two three-and-outs, a first-down lost fumble and a four-play scoring drive.

UNK heads to nationally-ranked Pittsburg State next Saturday. The Gorillas (3-0) stopped a two-point conversion with 25 seconds left to win at Central Missouri today, 38-37.

 

HASTINGS COLLEGE DEFENSE SHINES IN WIN OVER JAMESTOWN:

The Hastings College football team was put to the test once again but came out on top 17-10 over the Jamestown Jimmies on Saturday afternoon on Lloyd Wilson Field.

Hastings took the lead after taking over late in the third quarter following a short punt. The Broncos marched down to the 16 when Eli Nappe connected with Will Austin for the touchdown and the Broncos led 17-10 with 14:14 to go in the fourth.

Hastings is now 3-1 (2-1) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 23 hitting the road to take on Briar Cliff with kickoff set for 6:00 pm out in Sioux City, IA.

 

UNK VOLLEYBALL BACK ON TRACK WITH WIN AT EMPORIA:

The seventh-ranked Nebraska Kearney volleyball team hit .413 to sweep Emporia State Saturday afternoon in Kansas.

The win comes after the No. 7 Lopers were swept by No. 15 rated Washburn on Friday night in Topeka.

The Lopers (10-1, 1-1) beat the improving Hornets (7-3, 1-1) for a 24th straight time in MIAA action.

UNK begins a four-match homestand tonight against Doane University.

 

LOPER XC CONTINUES STRONG START TO SEASON:

The nationally-ranked Nebraska Kearney cross country teams placed third (men) and seventh (women) at the annual Greeno/Dirksen Invitational Saturday morning in Lincoln.

The 23rd-ranked men tallied had all five of its scorers crack the top 15 to help the team score 51 points.

On the women’s side, the 27th-ranked Lopers had its scorers all in the top 32 to finish seventh in a field of 27 (109 points).

The Lopers head to another large meet, the annual Chile Pepper Festival at Arkansas, on Sept. 29.

 

TRI-CITY ACQUIRED BADE IN TRADE WITH BLACK HAWKS:

The Tri-City Storm has acquired forward Zach Bade, a 7th round pick in the 2024 USHL Phase II Draft, and a 12th round pick in the 2024 USHL Phase II Draft from the Waterloo Black Hawks in exchange for defenseman Jake Delaney, and a 4th round pick in the 2024 USHL Phase II Draft. 

This transaction was announced following the conclusion of the Storm’s five-game exhibition schedule, and Bade is set to join the team for this week’s 2023 DICK’s Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic.

 

STATE OF FLORIDA SHOW OUT IN NEW AP TOP 25:

The state of Florida’s big three is back in the AP Top 25.

Florida State, Miami and Florida were all ranked in The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday. The last time that happened was briefly in September 2017.

Georgia remained at No. 1, followed by No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Florida State, and No. 5 USC. Ohio State placed No. 6, Penn State is at No. 7, and Iowa placed at No. 24.
