AMHERST — An investigation is underway by the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office to determine the circumstances of a rural Amherst structure fire and the death of an adult individual during the afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 5.
Around 3:57 p.m., the Amherst Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 13015 Amherst Road in response to a fire call.
On scene, a trailer home was found to be fully engulfed and was a total loss. While on scene the body of an adult was found deceased inside the trailer.
Preliminary investigation indicates that foul play is not suspected. The identity of the victim has not been confirmed and the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office has ordered an autopsy.
The investigation into the cause of the fire and the fatality remains under investigation.
The Amherst Volunteer Fire Department and Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by members of the Kearney Police Department, Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office.
