COLUMBUS – The Kearney Catholic Stars not only earned the 2023 Centennial Conference Volleyball title in Columbus on Saturday, but broke records along the way.

After winning over Aquinas (2-0) and Grand Island Central Catholic (2-0) on Thursday, the Stars aimed to keep their winning ways moving forward to Saturday’s matchups against Concordia, Hastings St. Cecilia, and Lincoln Lutheran.

Kearney Catholic won their first two matchups in sweeps, then the biggest test of the day came against Lincoln Lutheran. The Warriors had won 74 matches in a row, leading into the final match for the conference championship.

Kearney Catholic fell in the first set 25-19, but rallied in the second to earn a breath-taking 34-32 in extra points in Set Two. As part of the tournament format, Kearney Catholic would only need the Set Three victory to take the 25-17 Set Three victory and the Centennial Conference Crown.

The Stars (23-2) head to Broken Bow on Thursday for a varsity matchup followed by a triangular Saturday facing Sidney and North Platte. The final regular season matchup of the year comes on Thursday, Oct. 19 as the Stars host Overton.
