SEWARD CO. — One person was killed by deputies with the Seward County Sheriff’s Office after a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 80, during the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 23.
Around 3:11 p.m., deputies with the Seward County Sheriff’s Office attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a passenger vehicle that was occupied by two people and traveling westbound on Interstate 80.
The vehicle turned around and was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. Shortly after, the vehicle crossed over into the eastbound lanes near mile marker 383 and continued to travel eastbound, according to a press release from the Seward County Sheriff’s Office.
A high-speed pursuit then ensued until mile marker 390, ending in Lancaster County.
Once the vehicle came to a stop, the occupants were directed by law enforcement to exit the vehicle. The passenger complied but the driver refused.
While attempting to contact the driver, deputies observed a weapon in the driver’s hand. An officer-involved shooting occurred.
First aid was rendered to the suspect by deputies and troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol on scene, but they were later pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The Seward County Sheriff’s Office has not identified the person killed or the passenger.
The eastbound lane of I-80 was closed for several hours west of Lincoln, due to the nature of the scene and the investigation.
The Nebraska State Patrol Special Investigations Team was contacted by the Seward County Sheriff’s Office to handle the investigation.
As with all law enforcement shooting, there will be a grand jury held in Lancaster County at a future date.
The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released at a future date.
