HASTINGS — The Nebraska Department of Transportation will soon begin updating several traffic signals on Burlington Avenue between Seventh Street and North Shore Drive, adding protected left turn signals.
Members of the Hastings City Council in December, 2021 approved an agreement with the Nebraska Department of Transportation to add and upgrade left-turn along North Burlington Avenue, which is also U.S. Highway 34/281.
Weather permitting, work will begin Nov. 20 on the traffic signals.
The updated signals include protected left turns on:
- Seventh Street in the north/south direction
- 12th Street in the north/south Direction
- 14th Street in all directions
- 16th Street in the north/south direction
- North Shore Drive in the north/south direction
The project is anticipated to be completed around the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024.
During this process, power to the traffic signals will be disconnected for a short period of time at each intersection. Please obey the temporary signage during the process.
Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put down phones.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation looked at intersections along North Burlington Avenue, from all directions. The actions to be taken are what is currently warranted.
The State will continue to monitor those intersections to determine if additional protected left turns are needed.
Lee Vrooman, Director of Engineering for the City of Hastings, gave an update on the traffic signals while presenting the one- and six-year street improvement plan during the Hastings Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
“That will be a nice addition to going down Burlington,” Vrooman said of the updated signals.
