BEARCAT BASKETBALL BEGINS 2024 WITH ROAD WINS:
The Kearney Basketball teams opened up their new year celebrations in North Platte with road wins for both the girls and boys basketball teams on Tuesday night.
The girls earned a solid 56-44 team win with good performances from multiple players, none bigger than Kelsey Hatcher’s career day of 24 points including seven three pointers.
The boys improved to 6-3 on the season thoroughly dominating and controlling their matchup with the Bulldogs in a 91-53 victory.
Kearney now waits until Thursday to get back in action with the start of the new school year traveling to Grand Island for a doubleheader contest with the Islanders. Grand Island has been off since the HAC Tournament last week.
BRONCOS WOMEN DOWN BELLEVUE TO START 2024:
The Hastings College women’s basketball team opened the 2024 new year with a 62-50 victory over Bellevue on Tuesday afternoon inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Despite a slow start and trailing in the first quarter 16-10, the Broncos would go on a 27-6 run in the second to fend off Bellevue.
Hastings improves to 5-7 (2-5) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Jan. 6 as Morningside comes to town with tipoff set for 2:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
HUSKER MEN OPEN NEW YEAR WITH BIG TEN PLAY:
The Nebraska men’s basketball team looks for its fifth consecutive win Wednesday evening, as the Huskers wrap up a three-game homestand by hosting the Indiana Hoosiers in a Big Ten matchup. Tipoff between the Huskers and Hoosiers is set for 8:07 p.m.
Nebraska (11-2, 1-1 Big Ten) comes off a 91-62 win over South Carolina State on Dec. 29. C.J. Wilcher’s 18 points led four Huskers in double figures.
The Huskers’ 11-2 mark matches the Huskers’ best start since the 1991-92 season when NU opened the year with a 12-1 mark.
Indiana (10-3, 2-0 Big Ten) comes to Lincoln on a three-game win streak of its own following a 100-87 win over Kennesaw State on Dec. 29.
KGFW’s pregame coverage begins at 7 PM after a shortened Sports Nightly. Hear Husker Basketball on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.
RAMS ADD KEARNEY NATIVE FOR PLAYOFF PUSH:
The Los Angeles Rams, aiming to make a late playoff push, have added a former Kearney Bearcat and Nebraska Cornhusker to their roster.
Brett Maher will replace Lucas Havrisik, according to multiple reports and quotes from head coach Sean McVay on Monday.
Maher was with the Rams in the first six weeks of the season, but was cut following a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7 after missing two field goals and an extra point.
FORMER LONGHORN, COWBOY RECEIVER SET TO VISIT NEBRASKA:
Former Texas and Wyoming wide receiver Isaiah Neyor is planning to visit Nebraska this weekend, as confirmed and reported to Husker247 on Tuesday afternoon.
Neyor entered the transfer portal in early December after two seasons in the Texas program. He was viewed as a major addition to the Longhorns program after a previous portal trip that drew attention from some of college football’s heavy hitters.
He suffered a torn ACL during fall camp in 2022, which prevented a major hurdle to overcome while in Austin.
The 6-3, 215-pound receiver started his career at Wyoming, where he was an All-Mountain West performer following a 2021 campaign where he hauled in 44 receptions for 878 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore.
