Grand Island received 7.5 inches of snow, Hastings received 6.3 inches of snow, and Kearney received 8.5 inches of snow Monday according to Amanda Wekesser, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hastings.
Grand Island set two weather records for Jan. 8, she said. First, Grand Island recorded 0.6 inches of total liquid precipitation Monday, which breaks the record of 0.35 inches of liquid precipitation set in 1937.
Grand Island also received 7.5 inches of snow on Jan. 8, breaking the record of 4 inches of snow in 1937. She noted that precipitation and snowfall records for Grand Island date back to 1895.
Residents should brace for a cold spell that will arrive in the area on Friday. A high temperature of 8 degrees is expected for the Tri-Cities on Friday. Wind chill could be -10 degrees. Winds will be from the northwest at 15 to 20 miles per hour on Friday.
Friday night, residents in Grand Island and Hastings should expect a low of -7 degrees, while Kearney residents should expect a low of -9 degrees. The wind chill factor will be -25 degrees Friday night, with some locations in the Tri-Cities having a wind chill of -30 degrees to -35 degrees Friday night.
