GRAND ISLAND — Andrew Moss of Grand Island pleaded not guilty in writing in Hall County District Court Jan. 8 to stealing more than $150,000 from the Cornerstone Early Learning Center at St. Pauls Lutheran Church.

By entering in the innocent plea, Moss waived a formal arraignment, which was scheduled for Wednesday.

A telephonic pretrial hearing will occur at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 24 before District Judge Morgan Farquhar.

Moss, 37, is the former director of the Cornerstone Early Learning Center at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Early Learning Center includes a preschool and daycare center.

He is charged with theft by unlawful taking totaling $5,000 or more.

The judge in the case is Morgan Farquhar.

Moss is represented by Elizabeth Klingelhoefer of Kearney. The prosecutor is Hall County Attorney Marty Klein.

Moss is accused of transferring some of the money into online wagering accounts. Moss was hired as full-time director of Cornerstone Early Learning Center in April 2021 and was relieved of his duties on Oct. 2, 2023. Board members of the Early Learning Center had been notified by their bank that their bank account was at a negative balance, according to a Grand Island Police Department Probable Cause Statement filed Nov. 22, 2023, in Hall County Court.

According to the Probable Cause Statement, concerning the $150,000 theft amount, “it is believed that this amount will rise.”
