GRAND ISLAND — Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity has opened its Home Loan Application period. It is accepting submissions until 3 p.m. Feb. 28.
“As a devoted advocate for responsible lending practices, Habitat for Humanity adheres to banking laws, necessitating the comprehensive collection of key information, including income, credit history, and debt. Prospective applicants are urged to complete the loan application in full and submit supporting documents before the application deadline,” a news release said.
The application period runs from Dec. 1 through Feb. 28 annually, emphasizing the urgency and need for swift action. To facilitate the process, applicants are required to attend an informative application class, designed to explain the intricacies of the loan program. The registration for this class closes on Feb. 22, 2024.
All applications and relevant paperwork must be submitted to the office by 3 p.m. Feb. 28.
After the application deadline, “a meticulous processing of all applications will take place, initiating the crucial selection process. The selection committee will convene to review applicant information, ranking them based on their ability to pay, willingness to partner, and the pressing need for decent, affordable housing,” the news release said.
This year marks a significant milestone, with one homebuyer selected for Aurora and two for Grand Island. The construction of these homes, symbolizing hope and community resilience, is scheduled to commence in 2025.
For detailed information and to apply, prospective homeowners are encouraged to visit gihabitat.org/apply and register for the mandatory application class. The Home Loan Program assesses applicants’ ability to pay through an evaluation of income and debt, willingness to partner through the completion of 500 hours, and the undeniable necessity for decent, affordable housing.
Habitat for Humanity provides selected individuals with mortgages at a 0 percent interest rate for new construction homes built by dedicated volunteers.
