KEARNEY HIGH SWEEPS WESTVIEW IN METRO THRILLERS:
A thrilling night of basketball at Omaha Westview wrapped with Kearney High victories and a total of 233 points scored.
The Kearney girls (10-9) followed a career high day from Harley Straka as the senior ended with 23 points to set-up the game-winning lay-up by freshman Libby Province to earn the 71-69 win over Westview (7-11).
Meanwhile, the Bearcat boys (13-5) had an impressive fourth quarter surge, as Kearney trailed by four entering the final frame until they put up an 18-5 run to win 51-42.
Both Kearney teams take a rest until Friday night, hosting Lincoln Southeast at home. Find game recaps, broadcast replays, and photo galleries from Monday’s contests at KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.
NEBRASKA FOOTBALL LEGEND BURKHEAD TO RETIRE FROM NFL:
Rex Burkhead — a Super Bowl champion and one of the most memorable figures from the Pelini-era Huskers who captured the hearts of fans with his shiftiness out of the backfield and a hard-nosed rushing style — is retiring from football after 10 seasons in the NFL.
He announced his retirement on social media Monday.
Burkhead is No. 6 on the list of all-time rushing leaders for Nebraska, having amassed 3,329 yards on the ground and 30 touchdowns in 44 games donning the scarlet and cream.
Burkhead spent three seasons in Cincinnati in a small role before signing with the New England Patriots, where he again became an offensive threat and played a part in the team’s 2018 Super Bowl championship season.
HUSKER WOMEN AIM TO REBOUND IN MICHIGAN:
The Nebraska women’s basketball team shoots for its first Big Ten series sweep of the season when the Huskers head to Michigan.
Tip-off between the Big Red (14-8, 6-5) and the Wolverines (15-8, 6-5 Big Ten) at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor is set for 6 p.m. KGFW’s pregame coverage is set to start at 5:30 PM.
Nebraska will be looking to bounce back from a gut-wrenching 71-70 loss to Rutgers in Lincoln on Saturday. The Big Red took down the Wolverines three weeks ago in Lincoln 62-43.
Michigan is 15-8 overall and 6-5 in Big Ten play after an impressive road win at Penn State on Saturday 80-75.
NEBRASKA T&F BREAK INTO TOP TEN:
Nebraska men’s track and field is ranked eighth in the third week of the USTFCCCA rankings after a big weekend at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
The Husker men have posted five marks inside the top-10 nationally, while adding four all-time marks this season.
The Husker men are the top-ranked Big Ten team and have six event squads ranked in the top 10 nationally, including weight throw and triple jump at No. 2, high jump at No. 6, 60m hurdles and long jump at No. 7 and shot put at No. 9.
On the women’s side, Nebraska is ranked No. 2 in triple jump, No. 3 in shot put, No. 4 in long jump, No. 8 in high jump, and No. 9 in the weight throw.
EAGLES TO HOST NFL’S FIRST REGULAR SEASON GAME IN BRAZIL:
The Philadelphia Eagles will be the host team for the NFL’s first regular-season game in Brazil on Friday, Sept. 6 — a day after the 2024 season opener, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday.
Goodell made news when he said the Eagles will play in Sao Paolo against a to-be-named opponent. It’ll be the first time in 54 years the NFL has played a game on Friday night of its opening weekend. The Los Angeles Rams hosted the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 18, 1970.
The game will be played at the Corinthians Arena, home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians. The stadium was used in both the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
