HASTINGS — Above normal temperatures are expected through mid-week, but a cold front moves through and there is a chance for accumulating snow Thursday night into Friday.

The next several days will feature pleasant conditions owing to the above normal temperatures and seasonably light winds. Wednesday may be the breeziest of the period with gusts under 20 mph, per the National Weather Service – Hastings.

However, the next cold front is forecast to move through the area Wednesday evening. Most of the area could still see a nice day but if the front travels faster, areas north of Interstate 80 could trend colder.

A more significant and further southward tracking shortwave trough will move across the region Thursday night into Friday.

The current timing and track would support a 30-40 percent chance for at least light accumulating snow for portions of the area.

“There`s a slight preference to highest chances being in Nebraska than Kansas, but the wave has trended slightly further south over the past few runs. Even though amounts look to be light, the current timing suggests there could be nuisance travel impacts for the Friday morning commute,” NWS Hastings noted.

Dry conditions look to return Friday but, but cooler temperatures, but still near normal, will persist into Saturday given some fresh snow cover.

There is more confidence in warmer temperatures returning for Sunday into early next week, so snow cover will be short lived.

NWS Hastings notes that winter isn’t over but the model data isn’t supportive of anything other than minor bouts of winter over the next two weeks.
