An outdoor warning siren, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — From March 4 through March 8 2024, the Emergency Management Buffalo County/City of Kearney and the American Signal Corporation will be working to complete a yearlong upgrade to the Buffalo County Siren Activation system.

This upgrade is a two-way system that is more secure, more interactive, more automated and provides real time siren information back to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office 911 center and the emergency management office.

Testing of the outdoor warning sirens is required to insure all sirens in Buffalo County are working properly. The equipment to activate the Outdoor Emergency Warning System is a part of this upgraded system at each of the siren sites and in the Buffalo County 911 dispatch center.

To be certain all equipment is functioning properly, sirens will be tested individually with short bursts in all the communities in Buffalo County Nebraska Government and City of Kearney Nebraska Government periodically throughout the week.

The sirens may activate multiple times for one to two seconds and up to five to ten second burst tests.

This test is not a part of the normal monthly testing process, which will occur on March 7 at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.
