LEXINGTON — The Road 428 project on Dawson County’s one- and six-year road plan drew comments from the public during the county commissioners meeting on Friday, March 15.
The work on the road in question involves concrete paving from Highway 30, two miles north to the Darr Feedlot.
There were several public comments from residents in the area who requested that concrete paving be continued an additional two miles north to Road 761, the “Six Mile Road,” which connects over to Cozad.
Some residents complained that the heavy semi and truck traffic makes the road difficult to drive, and in some cases, the shaking had damaged homes in the area.
Craig Uden, with Darr Feedlot, also voiced his opinion that the entire four miles be paved, which would allow for the truck traffic to be diverted from other routes to this one.
John Schroeder, Darr Feedlot Manager, agreed with the decision to use concrete instead of asphalt on the Road 428 project. He said it could better stand up to the truck traffic in the area.
Commissioner Kevin Swanson added his thoughts, saying that he has driven a truck in the area and the local residents are not exaggerating about the washboards in the area.
Commissioner P.J. Jacobson said the Road 428 project has been discussed in the past but noted that it is an issue that comes down to how much funds the county has to draw from. He added that they have to prioritize different projects over the years.
The other projects on the one year road plan includes three bridge projects throughout the county, various asphalt overlay, concrete overlay, a full bridge replacement and a box culvert project.
