Bryce Nelson, (Liz Macias, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — Bryce Nelson is a candidate running for a position on the Kearney city council this election season.

Nelson said he was born and raised in Kearney and given his upbringing in the community, wants to further serve the community.

When asked what motivated him to run for a spot on the Kearney city council, Nelson said items such as fiscal responsibility, protecting the community and maintaining low taxes stand out to him.

Nelson added that it is important for there to be younger representatives on the city council. He noted he is 20 years old and currently works at Bomgaars.

When asked about his qualifications, Nelson said he has worked as a retailer for several years and has been able to listen to people talking about their experiences or concerns in the community.

“Hearing their issues and concerns is important for city council,” Nelson noted.

He said the community is growing at a “wonderful rate,” saying that it is one of the top five largest communities in the state at over 33,000. He said the low taxes have played a part in the growth and he thinks it’s very beneficial for Kearney, which he wants to see continue.

When asked what he would bring to the council, Nelson said he values having all sides at the table, to find the middle ground and find a way forward. He added he appreciates that Kearney is larger, but still has a strong sense of community.

“As long as we come together, Kearney will continue to be a wonderful place.”

When asked how he would keep in touch with residents, Nelson said he has been meeting people in-person and has been speaking with them about the Kearney community.

Asked about why votes should be cast for him, Nelson said he values honesty and truth telling in local government, and he would work to embody those if elected.

In conclusion, Nelson said running for city council with be a “wonderful learning experience,” for him, regardless of the outcome.
