KEARNEY — On Wednesday, May 8, Buffalo County Youth Advisory Board (YAB) will host a free screening of the movie Trust Me, at the World Theatre, 2318 Central Ave, Kearney, followed by a panel discussion with local youth. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will start at 7 p.m. Complimentary popcorn and drink for attendees are provided by the UNK American Democracy Project.

Trust Me is a documentary exploring human nature, information technology, and the need for media literacy to help people trust one another, bring them together and create a more resilient population.

“The Youth Advisory Board is excited to partner with The American Democracy Project to bring awareness and discussion about media literacy to the community. We all use, or are impacted by, social media every day. This free event is a chance for us to come together as a community and discuss how media literacy plays a role in building trust with one another,” said Ellery Butterfield, Youth Coordinator Buffalo County Community Partners.

Trust Me covers emotional stories, interwoven with science and expert interviews to show us where the world really stands and the right way to consume and share media. Over 15 experts were interviewed on the topic of media literacy. Those experts include media literacy organization directors and founders, professors of psychology, journalism, education and media studies, a former fake news creator, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, several authors, and a neuroscientist. Several real-life examples help explain why our current methods of consuming media aren’t healthy.

This film discusses topics that may be triggering or inappropriate for some audiences such as graphic violence, bullying, profanity, and substance misuse/abuse. The Youth Advisory Board does not encourage young children to be present in the audience.
Funding for this event was provided through the Region 3 Block Grant (64%) and UNK’s American Democracy Project.

The Youth Advisory Board is a program and a philosophy that recognizes youth as valuable resources in our community and empowers them as equal community partners to bring about positive community change.
