SPRING MATCH ARRIVES TO HEALTH & SPORTS CENTER SATURDAY:

The Nebraska volleyball team will play its 2024 Spring Match against Denver at the UNK Health and Sports Center in Kearney this afternoon.

The match is set to begin at 2 p.m., with doors opening 90 minutes prior to first serve.

For the third consecutive year, the Huskers’ spring match will be televised statewide on Nebraska Public Media.

The Huskers played their 2017 spring match at Kearney High School but have not played a spring match at UNK’s 5,000-seat Health and Sports Center.

 

MURRAY SUSPENDED FOR SPRING MATCH; IDENTIFIED IN SHOPLIFTING:

Per multiple reports, Nebraska Volleyball’s Harper Murray has been suspended by the team for Saturday’s Spring Match against Denver University.

Murray was cited for DUI in early-April after registering a BAC of 0.169. Murray was also found to be in possession of a fake ID. Her court appearance for the charge is set for May 8.

Recently, a social media post and Lincoln Police Department incident reported a shoplifting incident on Thursday, with social media linking them to Murray.

 

KEARNEY BASEBALL BEGINS DISTRICT POSTSEASON:

Baseball postseason takes place around the state today for all classes, as the Class A District Tournaments today will determine who moves on to Omaha in the next few weeks. 

Kearney (15-13) enters the A-1 District as the third overall seed and faces off against new foe Omaha Westside. First pitch for the semifinal follows the conclusion of the Lincoln East and Omaha North matchup.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL SEVENTH INNING BLAST LIFTS HUSKERS OVER GOPHERS:

Dylan Carey’s go-ahead two-run blast in the seventh inning powered Nebraska to a 10-7 win at Minnesota on Friday night at Siebert Field.

Nebraska (29-15, 11-5 B1G) totaled 10 runs on 14 hits and an error, while Minnesota (20-20, 6-10 B1G) tallied seven runs on 11 hits with three errors.

Carey finished 3-for-4 with a home run and a trio of RBI, his third three-hit game of the season. Brett Sears made his 12th start of the season, tossing five innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with five punchouts.

Nebraska and Minnesota continue the weekend series today at 3 p.m. CT at Siebert Field.

 

HUSKER SOFTBALL TAKES GAME ONE SERIES WIN:

The Nebraska softball team used a five-run fourth inning to claim a 7-6 victory at Minnesota Friday night in the opening game of the final Big Ten series of the year.

The Huskers led 2-0 early before Minnesota scored the next four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Nebraska regained the lead at 7-4 with its big fourth inning, then held off a two-run rally by the Gophers in the bottom of the seventh.

With the win, Nebraska improved to 28-21 on the season. The Huskers moved up to third place in the Big Ten standings with an 11-8 conference record.

Nebraska and Minnesota continue their series on Saturday at 2 p.m.

 

CLASS A STATE SOCCER FIELD SET; CLASS B DISTRICT FINALS BEGIN SATURDAY:

Class B Girls and Boys Soccer district finals take place across the state today, setting up state tournament bids beginning next week.

In Class B Girls, Northwest welcomes #12 York in the B-5 District Final at 11 AM.

For Class B Boys, Kearney Catholic travels to South Sioux City for a 1 PM draw. Northwest heads to Bennington for a 12:30 PM matchup, Lexington hosts #13 Elkhorn at 12:30 PM, and Hastings will travel to Schuyler at noon.

FORMER HUSKER COACH ADDED TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF COMMITTEE:

Former Nebraska and Oregon State head football coach Mike Riley has been named to the College Football Playoff selection committee, per a report by ESPN.

The former Husker head coach replaces athletic director Pat Chun, after Chun elected to join the University of Washington as its next athletic director.

Riley was fired by former athletic director Bill Moos in November 2017 after suffering a season-ending loss to Iowa in the home regular season finale.

Riley finished 19-19 overall at Nebraska in three seasons.
