COWLES — An EF-0 occurred near Cowles in Webster County during the evening of Monday, May 6 as the active period of severe weather continued.

The Webster County Sheriff`s Office assisted the National Weather Service – Hastings with a damage survey late Monday night and early Tuesday morning of a weak tornado east of Cowles in Webster County.

This tornado occurred within a line of thunderstorms that was moving across the county. Damage along its seven-mile path included tree damage at a few locations, an overturned camper, broken windows and damage to an older outbuilding.

The tornado was likely embedded in rain, which made it difficult to visually distinguish from the low clouds, rain and straight-line winds associated with the thunderstorm complex.

It lifted after causing minor tree damage along Highway 78 near S Road.

The tornado was on the ground from 4:19 p.m. to 4:29 p.m., starting three miles southeast of Cowels and lifted four miles south southeast of Rosemont.

It had peak winds of 75 mph and had a maximum width of 40 yards. The tornado was rated an EF-0 based upon the tree damage.

“The NWS would like to thank the Webster County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the survey and documentation of the tornado,” NWS Hastings stated.
