KEARNEY — A Kearney business owner has pleaded no contest to charges of sexual assault of a child and felony child abuse.

Alan Mais, 60, of Heartwell had been charged in Kearney County with nine counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child, each a Class 3A felony and intentional child abuse – no injury, a Class 3A felony.

Mais is listed as the owner of The Camera Doctor in Kearney.

An entry of plea took place on May 9, where Mais pleaded no contest to two counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child and one charge of intentional child abuse – no injury. A no contest plea is neither an admission nor denial of guilt, but the plea is treated the same as a guilty plea.

The other seven counts of sexual assault of a child were dismissed by Kearney County District Court.

A sentencing hearing has been set for July 8 at 10 a.m.

Mais filed bail, 10 percent of $27,000 on Dec. 5, 2023. Stipulations include that he is to have no contact with the alleged victim, no contact with anyone under the age of 18 and is excluded from his residence in Heartwell.

The court documents detailing the charges were ordered sealed, but the complaint says the alleged charges occurred between July 1 and Nov. 13.

An arrest warrant for Mais was issued on Nov. 14.
