GRAND ISLAND — It’s a close race in the 35th District of the Legislature, with both candidates advancing to the general election.

Dan Quick received 1,659 votes, compared to 1,575 votes for State Sen. Ray Aguilar, who received 1,575 votes. That’s a difference of 84 votes.

State Sen. Ray Aguilar, 73, said he was disappointed that he did not win the primary.

“I wanted to win,” he said.

He said that four years ago, he lost in the primary election, but came back to win in the general election.

“I don’t have as many votes to make up this time,” he said.

He said he first served in the Legislature, starting in 1998, for 10 years. After a 12-year absence from the Legislature, he has served for the last four years.

He said between now and the general election, he is going to be working hard to get his message out. He wants to show the differences between the two candidates. He also will be working on trying to get more people to get out and vote in the general election.

“I believe I’m the better person for the position,” Aguilar said.
