Spencer Schwellenbach, Nebraska Baseball 2021 // Nebraska Athletics

ATLANTA – Former Nebraska baseball star Spencer Schwellenbach is heading to the major leagues, per multiple reports.

The Atlanta Braves called up Schwellenbach from Double-AA ball on Tuesday, nearly three years after drafting him in the second round. He is expected to start in Atlanta against the Washington Nationals at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The Braves have not yet confirmed the report from the website or social media pages.

Schwellenbach was an All-American with the Huskers in 2021 and the top two-way player in college baseball while splitting time between shortstop and closer that spring as a junior.

He had Tommy John surgery soon after the draft and is now a full-time pitcher having a breakout season: 45 innings with a 1.80 ERA and 51 strikeouts against only 10 walks. Schwellenbach started 2024 in High Class-A and was promoted to Double-A two weeks ago. He is skipping over Triple-A.

Schwellenbach will be the 11th different starting pitcher used by the Braves this season.
