GRAND ISLAND — A Grand Island man was arrested for criminal impersonation, DUI and other charges following a traffic stop during the evening of Thursday, May 29.
According to the Grand Island Police Department, at 10:37 p.m., a traffic stop was initiated at 1823 E. Capital Ave. for a vehicle of interest.
The male driver got out of the vehicle on his own and would refuse commands from officers. The driver was secured in handcuffs and when he was taken to the patrol unit, he attempted to flee on foot.
The male was secured on the ground after trying to get away from the officer. Per the GIPD, the driver then provided a name that was not his and came back after a dispatch check as a real person.
The male would be identified as Lathen Bills via a booking photo from the Hall County Department of Corrections.
Officers found that Bills did not have a driver’s licenses and there was an open alcoholic container in his pocket and in the vehicle.
The passenger of the vehicle had an active and served protection order against Bills, there were also two juveniles under the age of 16 in the vehicle.
Officers noted that Bills had a strong order of alcohol coming from his body. The passengers would state they had been drinking all day long with Bills.
A preliminary breath and chemical test were requested, and Bills refused to submit to either test.
A records check came back and found Bills had a prior driving under the influence conviction in February and a prior conviction for refusal to submit to a test, from February 2018.
Bills was booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections for criminal impersonation, driving under the influence – second offense with refusal, refusal to test – breath, chemical, two counts of transporting a child while intoxicated, no driver’s license, protection order violation, resisting arrest and open alcohol container.
