HASTINGS — The Tri-Cities will have to endure one more Heat Advisory today before cooler temperatures start on Tuesday and will linger through the weekend.

A Heat Advisory remains in effects for all counties along and south of Interstate 80, including Merrick and Polk counties through 8 p.m. Heat index values are expected to be as high as 110 degrees in certain areas, according to the National Weather Service – Hastings.

“Additionally, there will be a chance of thunderstorms this evening and overnight. There is high confidence that thunderstorms will develop over high terrain in Colorado this afternoon and move eastward, but how much will make it into our forecast area is still in question,” NWS Hastings notes.

By Tuesday, an upper-level trough to the north will dive southeast and push the area of high pressure that has been lingering over the area further west into the desert Southwest.

“This will bring cooler and potentially wetter weather to the area. As the ridge will be to the west of the forecast area, we will see cooler temperatures. Highs will be in the 80s across most of south-central Nebraska and in the low 90s across north central Kansas,” NWS Hastings stated.

There has been stronger model consensus supporting areas west of Highway 281 having a 40-55 percent chances of rain, while areas east have a 20-30 percent chance of rain.

A persistent northwesterly upper-level flow pattern will keep the area cool and high temperatures will be in the 70s and 80s through this time.

Looking to the end of the week, temperatures look to be more comfortable given it is mid-July Thursday sees highs around 79, while Friday will reach 84 with a 20 percent chance of showers during the day, 50 percent during the evening.

Saturday will be partly sunny with a high near 81, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Sunday will see highs around 76.
