GRAND ISLAND — Two men would be arrested and one of them tased after he attempted to flee a traffic stop where methamphetamine was discovered on Tuesday, July 16.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, at 2 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a black 2009 Nissan Altima with no plates or visible in-transit documentation.

Upon contacting the driver, later identified as Brian Cueva, he initially refused to identify himself, provide proof of insurance or registration of the vehicle.

Cueva was ordered to exit the vehicle for failure to identify. He was eventually identified but did not procure any of the requested documentation.

A passenger, later identified as Luis Alvarado-Lima, appeared to be moving around in the vehicle upon the officer’s initial approach.

Alvarado-Lima was observed throwing an item from the front passenger side to the back of the vehicle, which was later identified as a bag containing a white crystal substance.

While speaking with Cueva, Alvarado-Lima was observed jumping into the driver’s seat and attempted to flee the traffic stop.

Alvarado-Lima was tased and ordered to get out of the vehicle and was placed into custody. While escorting him to the patrol vehicle, he broke away from the officer’s grip and attempted to run away.

Officers yelled commands to stop or be tased again. Officers caught up to Alvarado-Lima after a brief foot pursuit and escorted him back to the patrol vehicle, where he was searched as an incident to an arrest.

A digital scale white crystalline residue was found in his short pockets. A later search of the vehicle leads to the discovered of two large bags containing a crystalline substance that was later confirmed as methamphetamine.

Cueva was arrested for driving under revocation – second offense, no proof of insurance and no proof of ownership.

Alvarado-Lima was arrested for drug paraphernalia, obstructing a police officer, resisting arrest – first offense, possession of marijuana – under one ounce, first offense, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and tampering with physical evidence.
