Fog at sunrise in Buffalo County, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)
HASTINGS — There will be one final day of above average heat before a cold front arrives and sends temperatures back to seasonal norms for the remainder of the week.
According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, Monday will see above average temperatures during the day that will fall just short of formal Heat Advisory issuance.
“The main factors against Advisory issuance included the expected very limited/likely brief coverage of 105 plus heat index, and the possibility that what could end up being a more
concentrated batch of mid-high-level clouds moving in from the northwest might hold down forecast temperatures a touch,” according to a NWS Hastings forecast discussion.
Looking aloft, there are several disturbances in the upper-level flow that will interact with the upper-level ridge of high pressure that has been dominating over the area. The ridge will be flattened to some extent.
These upper-level waves will allow a reasonably strong cold front, by early August standards, to gradually pass through central Nebraska.
High temperatures on Tuesday will be 15 degrees cooler than Monday, with mid-80s across central Nebraska. There is a slight chance of a few showers and weak storms for north central Nebraska, but the main activity should be farther north.
Wednesday will be slightly warmer than Tuesday, but the evening and overnight hours look to be the best chance to break the recent dry spell.
Storms roll in from the northwest, possibly in the form of a larger squall line. Precipitation chances range from 40-60 percent.
For Thursday, another cool-down is in store behind another passing front, with highs aimed only upper 70s-low 80s Nebraska and mid-upper 80s in Kansas,” per NWS Hastings.
From Friday into the weekend, the cooler temperature regime will continue, with highs mainly in the 70s to low 80s, along with several more chances for showers and thunderstorms.
