GRAND ISLAND – The Nebraska State Fair is switching to a different decorating component – wood pallets – for its community decorating contest this year.
In the past, groups have decorated items such as hay bales. But this is the first year for wood pallets.
Five wood pallets were provided to 30 selected contestants. Judging of the entries is Aug. 12 and Aug. 13. Contest winners will be announced on Aug. 16. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries.
Also, a People’s Choice will be determined by photo “likes” on the Nebraska State Fair Facebook page.
Two of this year’s entries were at Home Federal Bank on West Stolley Park Road and Tabitha at Prairie Commons.
At Home Federal Bank, pallets were used to form railroad tracks. A train engine built from wood is on the train tracks. A sign is labeled, “Making tracks to fun at the State Fair.”
At Tabitha at Prairie Commons, wood was used to construct what looks like a pickup truck. Lettering painted on the blue truck is “All roads lead to fun.” The pickup truck has headlights that are glowing white circular lights.
