KEARNEY — A Kearney woman who shot a Kearney Police Department officer in the emergency room has received a prison sentence.
Alicia Martinez, 32, had been charged with second degree assault, a Class 2 A felony.
Martinez pleaded no contest to the charges in July.
During sentencing, Buffalo County District Court Judge Ryan Carson sentenced Martinez to a minimum of eight years, not to exceed 15 years. She was given credit for 211 days previously served.
According to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, an investigation was conducted into an assault on a Kearney Police Officer that occurred Friday Feb. 2 at the CHI Good Samaritan Emergency Department.
A preliminary investigation determined that officers were called for a welfare check on Alicia Martinez, 32.
Martinez, of Kearney, transported to CHI Good Sam for an evaluation. While at the ER she became uncooperative and combative with medical staff and officers.
At some point a handcuffed Martinez was able to access the officers holstered weapon and discharged a single shot into the officer’s leg. The weapon was never removed from its holster.
The injured officer is a sixteen-year veteran with KPD. They were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The second officer had been with KPD for two and half years.
Martinez was booked in Buffalo County Jail on one count of second-degree assault.
