GRAND ISLAND — In just a few days, the Grand Island Public Library’s Bygone Book Club will discuss “An Unspeakable Sadness: The Dispossession of the Nebraska Indians” by David J. Wishart. The discussion will be Saturday, September 14 at 11:30 a.m. in Meeting Room BC.
Of all the interactions between the Native Americans and European settlers, none were more fundamental than the acquisitions of their land. While settlers saw this acquisition as a natural right, Native Americans saw it as a tragic loss of history, subsistence and even their identities. Wishart uses primary documents and oral histories to tell the story of the dispossession of the native lands of the Otoe-Missouria, Ponca, Omaha and Pawnee in 19th Century Nebraska.
