GRAND ISLAND – Youth were either busy grooming their cattle or showing them during the second day of the Aksarben Stock Show at Fonner Park.
Competition for stock including cattle, sheep, goats, and swine were on the schedule for Sept. 27 events.
Conner Shivers, 13, of Bondurant, Iowa, had two entries of market average cattle. The cattle were born March 23 and weigh about 1,250 pounds. He is involved in 4-H. This is his second year at the show.
Taylor Larsen, 15, of Armstrong, Iowa, had three cattle entered. She is involved in FFA and 4-H.
“This is my third year here,” she said. ‘I think it’s really fun. There’s a lot of different activities you can do.”
Jayme Vinton, 16, is from Glenwood, Iowa. This is her second year at the show. She likes the environment in the barn. She is involved in 4-H. She entered four cattle in the show. They were born between January and April 2024.
Olivia Beeson, 17, is from Anthon, Iowa. She entered two cattle. This is her fourth year at the show.
“They have nice facilities,” she said.
Cody Vancura, 12, is from Jackson, Minn. This is his third time at the show. He is involved in 4-H.
“It’s just a nice show,” he said. “It’s set up right.” He had two cattle entered.
Ryan Rathmann was the judge for the heifer feeder cattle show that started at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 27.
He said the cattle he judged had been “exceptional.”
“The kids are doing a good job,” he said.
The Aksarben Stock Show continues Saturday and Sunday at Fonner Park. The show has 3,000 entries from 14 states. The Nebraska State Fair manages the show, which is using numerous buildings at the site.
