HASTINGS — Hastings Fire & Rescue is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association— the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 100 years — to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”
Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 6-12, 2024 but Hastings Fire and Rescue recognizes the entire month of October as Fire Prevention Month.
According to the NFPA, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54%). Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Hastings Fire & Rescue offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:
- 1. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
- 2. Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- 3. Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
- 4. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
“Hastings Fire and Rescue encourages all residents to actively support the 2024 FPW theme, ‘Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!’ Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely,” said Anthony Murphy, HFR
Community Risk Reduction Officer. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is a great way to remind everyone about these messages and to act on them.”
Hastings Fire & Rescue is hosting a series of events in support of this year’s FPW campaign, including an open house 9-11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12 at Fire Station 1, 1313 N. Hastings Ave.
The open house will include station tours and other activities. Hastings Firefighters Local 675 will also be providing a free pancake breakfast.
