HASTINGS — Critical fire weather conditions have prompted the issuance of a Red Flag Warning for areas along and south of Interstate 80 for Tuesday, Oct. 29.
“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” per the National Weather Service – Hastings.
The warning is in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Winds will be strong out of the southwest, blowing at 25-35 mph and gusting up to 35-50 mph. Relative humidity will also be low, with areas west of a line from Merrick County to Oxfords seeing only 25-35 percent.
Areas to the east of this line will see slightly higher humidity, 20-40 percent.
Unseasonably warm temperatures, in the mid-70s for south central Nebraska, and the ongoing dry conditions have resulted in the warning being issued.
