HASTINGS — Dangerously cold wind chills are in place over central Nebraska and a Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect until late morning on Monday, Jan. 6.
According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, wind chills as low as minus 15 to minus 25 degrees across much of the area, making this the first time this winter the values have been this cold.
The advisory will be in effect until 11 a.m.
“Although wind speeds this morning will be rather light, mainly only 5 to 10 MPH, even these lighter breezes will drive wind chills to dangerous levels. Please note: Cold Weather Advisories are new as of this winter, and effectively replace the legacy Wind Chill Advisory, which has been discontinued,” NWS Hastings noted.
“The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures,” per NWS Hastings.
