KEARNEY — From Jan. 22, 2025, through Jan. 25, 2025, the Kearney Police Department conducted a Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) operation.

This event aimed to impact traffic safety at intersections within the city that experience high volumes of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Kearney Police Officers participated in 23.5 additional enforcement hours focused on intersection safety. The intent was to identify, educate, and enforce traffic signal compliance to reduce serious and fatal crashes linked to intersection or right-of-way violations.

During the campaign, officers contacted 106 motorists and issued 21 citations, including driving under suspension, open containers of alcohol, unrestrained motorists, improper turn, traffic signal violations, and other moving violations.

“Throughout the past few months and multiple operations, the STEP program has proven to be an overwhelming success through targeted, high-volume enforcement efforts of the most dangerous driving behaviors such as DUI, reckless driving, speeding, distracted driving, and
running red lights. Officers assigned to these operations have seen a marked increase in traffic stops, resulting in multiple citations to change driver behavior and increase traffic safety. We are thankful for the funding and support from the Office of Highway Safety and the dedicated
officers doing the work. Drive safe Kearney!” – Chief Bryan D. Waugh

Kearney Police Department’s participation in this traffic safety operation is funded through a Special Traffic Enforcement Program grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.
