GRAND ISLAND — The low temperature record for Feb. 20 was shattered in both Grand Island and Hastings, with the records for the day dating back over 80 years ago.
According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, the Grand Island Central Nebraska Regional Airport recorded a low temperature of -24 degrees, which broke the old record of -11 set back in 1938, which was 87 years ago.
This ties the 10th coldest low ever recorded at Grand Island, where observations date back to 1895.
Additionally, the Hastings Municipal Airport recorded a low temperature of -20 degrees, breaking the old record of -12 which was set back in 1918, over 100 years ago.
The last time temperatures where this cold was the Feb. 13-17, 2021, during the North American cold wave.
“The Extreme Cold Warning will be allowed to expire at noon today due to wind chills warming up into the negative teens to positive single digits across the area this afternoon,” per NWS Hastings.
