Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — Members of the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment on the west side of Kearney during the morning of Tuesday, March 11.

At 9:39 a.m., the KVFD was dispatched to 61 Villa Dr., for the report of smoke coming from the bedroom of an apartment. Dispatch advised that no one answered the door so it was unknown if there were occupants inside.

Arriving on scene, KVFD established command, and crews began their offensive fire attack and search operations. Firefighters entered the building and found the fire coming from the kitchen area of the apartment.

The apartment was unoccupied at the time of the fire and damage was limited to the apartment of origin.

The cause of the fire was determined to be unattended items that were left on a stove. The property manager was working to find an alternative living space for the displaced occupant.

No injuries were reported. Other agencies assisting at the scene were the Kearney Police Department, CHI Good Samaritan EMS, Nebraska Public Power District and Northwestern Energy.
