HASTINGS — A Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather conditions has been issued for all of central Nebraska during the afternoon of Thursday, April 9.
The National Weather Service – Hastings has issued the warning for 12 p.m. through 8 p.m. The Red Flag Warning replaces an earlier Fire Weather Watch that was issued on Wednesday.
The warning has been issued because winds out of the northwest are expected to blow 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Relative humidity values are expected to be as low as 15 percent across the area.
Any fires that develop will spread quickly, outdoor burning is not recommended at all on Thursday.
“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” per NWS Hastings.
“Winds decrease this evening and turn to the south for Friday. Most of the area will see fairly low fire danger on Friday, but far western areas may see gusts as high as 20-25 mph, leading to a near critical fire weather threat west of Highway 183,” per NWS Hastings.
