KEARNEY — Buffalo County residents, please be aware of a recent uptick in virtual kidnapping scams. In these scams, callers falsely claim to have kidnapped a family member—often a child—and demand an immediate ransom.

In a recent local incident, parents were unable to verify their child’s safety directly because the child was at school without phone access.

Thankfully, the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office was quickly contacted, and deputies confirmed the child was safe at school.

If you receive such a call:

  • Stay calm and try to verify your loved one’s location.
  • Do  notwire money or provide any financial information.
  • Immediately contact the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office at 308-236-8555 or dial 911.

Stay vigilant and share this information with family and friends to help prevent others from becoming victims.
