The Fred & Pamela Buffet Cancer Center - Kearney, 2232 Chancellors Ave., (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — It’s a drive-thru breakfast serving up more than just food. Brake for Breakfast, a popular Nebraska Medicine | Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center awareness event, is coming to Grand Island and Kearney for the first time!

The event encouraging cancer awareness and prevention will make its debut in Kearney on Thursday, May 8 and in Grand Island on Friday, May 9.

Volunteers will hand out free breakfast to drivers at both locations, encouraging them to learn about vital cancer screenings. Those taking part will receive information on when and how to get evaluated for six types of cancer: breast, cervical, colon, lung, prostate and skin cancer. You can find information on those cancer screenings here.

Free breakfast sandwiches, fresh fruit and beverages will be served, along with a complimentary gift, healthy recipe ideas and cancer screening information.

“When we opened the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Kearney, our goal was not only to treat those currently dealing with cancer, but also to educate the community about cancer screening and prevention,” says Cynthia Lewis, MD, the center’s medical director and Nebraska Medicine hematologist/oncologist. “We are looking forward to bringing this popular event to Kearney and Grand Island for the first time, so we can talk to our neighbors face to face and provide them with potentially life-saving information.”

“As Nebraska’s only NCI-designated cancer center, we have a responsibility to increase awareness about the importance of cancer screenings to our community,” says Shinobu Wantanabe-Galloway, associate director from the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center’s Community Outreach and Engagement Office. “Brake for Breakfast is a simple, engaging way to start that conversation with the public — and spark action that could ultimately save lives”

Drivers can stop by the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center – Kearney (2232 Chancellors Ave.) on Thursday, May 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., or while supplies last. On Friday, May 9, volunteers will be ready to greet drivers at the Nebraska Medicine Grand Island Health Center (729 North Custer Ave.) from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., or while supplies last. Those attending won’t even have to leave their cars to collect their breakfast and information.
