KEARNEY — On Tuesday, May 13, third-grade students from Meadowlark Elementary will step out of the classroom and into their community as they embark on a local tour to learn more about the people, places, and services that make Kearney thrive.
From 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., students will visit the Kearney Fire Department, the Law Enforcement Center, and the Kearney Public Library. The experience begins around 8:45 a.m. at the fire station, where the students will be divided into three rotating groups—one for each third-grade class.
This engaging field trip supports the third-grade social studies curriculum, which focuses on understanding communities and local government. “In third grade, we spend time learning about our community—its history, how it works, and all the great things it has to offer,” said Paige Leis, a KPS educator. “This field trip brings that learning to life!”
At the fire station, students will explore emergency vehicles and hear from firefighters about their role in keeping the community safe. At the law enforcement center, they’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at police operations and learn how local law enforcement supports public safety. And at the public library, students will discover the exciting summer reading program and hear about events and resources available to families.
The students will also enjoy a short walking tour of downtown Kearney’s historic “bricks” area, where they’ll see firsthand the architecture and charm of the city’s past and present.
This local adventure offers a meaningful opportunity for students to connect classroom lessons to real-world experiences and build a deeper appreciation for the community they call home.
