KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools is proud to announce that two talented Kearney High School students have been recognized in the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for Nebraska’s 3rd District.

Ella Bokenkamp earned 2nd place for her screen print and mixed media piece titled Midwest Migration, a creative tribute to one of Nebraska’s natural wonders—the Sandhill Crane. Ella is a Graphic Design 2 student under the instruction of Charlotte Dvorak. Her artwork will be proudly displayed in Congressman Adrian Smith’s Washington, D.C. office, where it will represent the creativity and perspective of Nebraska youth on a national stage.

Emma Harwood received 3rd place for her powerful charcoal portrait Unwavering Roots, inspired by her mother’s strength and enduring Nebraska spirit. Emma is an Art 3 student taught by Natasha Hahn. Her piece will be exhibited in Congressman Smith’s Grand Island District Office.

To celebrate these accomplishments, Congressman Adrian Smith will visit Kearney High School on Tuesday, May 27, at 9:00 AM to meet and congratulate Emma Harwood in person. While Ella Bokenkamp is unable to attend, her artwork will be on display during the meet and greet, which will take place in front of the Art Display Case near the G-100 hallway.

The Congressional Art Competition, established in 1982, is a nationwide visual arts contest that recognizes the work of high school artists from each congressional district. The competition highlights the creativity, talent, and perspectives of young Americans through the visual arts.

“These students represent the best of what our arts programs can inspire—technical skill, deep reflection, and authentic storytelling,” said KHS art instructors Natasha Hahn and Charlotte Dvorak. “We are incredibly proud of Emma and Ella for this prestigious recognition.”
