Hastings, Nebraska, Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today

HASTINGS — The Hastings city council changed their decision on consecutive terms of office for members of municipal boards during their meeting on Monday, June 23.

In May the city council had voted to reject a proposal which would limit consecutive terms of office for appointed members to municipal boards or commissions.

During Monday’s meeting, the council voted 5-3 to approve the term limits ordinance on first reading.

The proposed ordinance would limit individuals to two consecutive terms on a board or commission and limit them to serving on one board or commission at a time.

The council members who voted in favor of the motion included Mike Anderson, Larry Consbruck, Steve Huntley and Marc Rowan. Those who voted no included Maggie Esch, Matt Fong and Brian Hoffman.

Consbruck, had asked that a reconsideration of the matter be placed on the agenda on Monday, which was the last opportunity for the matter to be considered.

Mayor Jay Beckby provided the decisive fifth vote to approve the motion to reconsider and then granting first round approval of the ordinance.

There was no move to suspend the rules and approve the term limit ordinance on a second and final reading. The council will again take up the matter at their next meeting.
