I-80 traffic at a standstill near Elm Creek due to an accident on June 25, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)
ELM CREEK — Interstate 80 was closed for five hours near Elm Creek after a semi accident occurred amid severe weather that was rolling through central Nebraska during the afternoon of Wednesday, June 25.
Around 3:20 p.m., while severe thunderstorms moved through central Nebraska, Elm Creek Fire and Rescue, the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol were dispatched near the area of mile marker 255 on Interstate 80 near Elm Creek for the report of an accident that was blocking the east and westbound lane.
This area of I-80 is under construction, with the north lane closed and head-to-head traffic in the south lane.
Traffic was diverted at Kearney and Lexington around the accident location.
According to Cody Thomas, Public Relations Director with the Nebraska State Patrol, an eastbound semi crossed into the westbound lane and struck another vehicle, which then involved another semi.
Thomas said that the severe weather may have played a role in the accident.
There were no serious injuries reported with the accident.
