KEARNEY — A Flood Advisory remains in effect in Buffalo County until 9 a.m. on Monday, June 30 after just over an inch of rain fell quickly during the early morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, ponding of water in urban and other areas is occurring or is imminent.

As of 6:29 a.m., Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms that entered Buffalo County around 2:40 a.m. Minor flooding was ongoing or is expected, around 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain have fallen.

NWS Hastings stated that Buffalo County Emergency Manager Darren Lewis reported street flooding in Kearney and several vehicles stalled in the flood waters. The Kearney Police Department had several streets throughout the community closed due to the flooding early Monday morning.

“Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles,” per NWS.

In addition to the rain, the storms generated wind gusts between 50-70 mph, areas west of Kearney reported 60 mph, while 50 mph winds were recorded in Kearney.

Power was lost in the Odessa area around 2:50 a.m. and was restored around 4 a.m.
