NORTH PLATTE — At approximately 11:15 p.m. on July 11, officers responded to the 1600 block of west 2nd St. after receiving a report that one brother shot and killed another brother in the residence where they both reside.

Upon arrival, the suspect came to the door, shut the door and barricaded himself inside of the residence. Members of the North Platte Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office secured the scene, and negotiations were initiated with the suspect.

Other officers gathered intelligence on the victim and suspect, learning that there was likely an 11-year-old boy inside the house. Negotiations continued throughout the night with the suspect, who confirmed that his brother was deceased, and his son was with him inside of the house.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., the negotiating team was able to get the suspect to release the 11-year-old child from the house and he was safely removed from the area. Shortly after his release, the negotiating team heard what sounded like a gun shot.

Members of the North Platte Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s office tactically entered the home. The 39-year-old suspect was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. His 37-year-old brother was also found deceased inside of the home and appeared to have been the victim of a gunshot wound.

Because the home was secured by law enforcement at the time of the suspect’s death, it will be considered an in-custody death and presented to a grand jury. For this reason, the scene was secured, and the investigation was turned over to the Nebraska State Patrol.
